Senate rebels against Trump: 5 Republicans join move to end Brazil tariffs over Bolsonaro row
In a dramatic turn, the Republican-led US Senate voted 52–48 to overturn Donald Trump’s tariffs against Brazil- an order issued after Brazil prosecuted former president Jair Bolsonaro for an alleged coup attempt.
In addition to the former president, the appeals of six other defendants – onetime allies considered to be the main instigators of the attempted coup after the 2022 election defeat – will be tried in the same online session.
"Bolsonaro attempted a coup in this country, and there is hundreds of pieces of evidence," Lula said early Thursday in an interview with local TV Band, ahead of the trial. The far-right politician had been previously banned from running for office until 2030 in a separate case.
