Texas lawmakers voted on Friday to accelerate the legal process for ousting squatters on private property and to streamline parts of the eviction process for landlords, while nixing more sweeping reforms that tenant advocates have warned would endanger millions of Texas renters.

The bill also contains a controversial provision that says it cannot be challenged in state court before it is enforced. It goes now to the House for a full vote.

The Texas Senate unanimously passed House Bill 2 on Friday, allocating billions more for the state's public schools. Lawmakers in the upper chamber voted 31-0 just before 7 p.m., with Republicans and Democrats united in approving the $8.

The move could anger House members who agreed to ban recreational THC with assurances that veterans and others in need would have better access to the program.

While supporters of the bill say it's needed to make it easier to remove squatters, some in opposition say it undermines due process.

The Texas House on Thursday passed Senate Bill 33, which aims to prevent local governments from using tax money to support people who leave the state to find abortion care. The bill will need final approval from the state Senate before heading to Gov.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, championed the prioritization of the curriculum amendment “so history does not repeat itself.”
