Hurricane Melissa strengthens to Category 3, could be Jamaica's most powerful storm in history
There is nowhere that will escape the wrath of this storm,” said Evan Thompson, the principal director of Jamaica’s Meteorological Service.
Melissa is expected to become a major hurricane but will likely stay away from the East Coast even as it turns northward.
At 2 a.m. Sunday, the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory stating that Category 3 Hurricane Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 125 miles south-southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 295 miles west-southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. With maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, the hurricane is moving west-southwest at 5 mph.
The National Hurricane Center is keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Melissa, which is expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane.
Tropical Storm Melissa is expected to undergo rapid intensification and grow into a powerful Category 4 hurricane by early next week.
The National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. Friday update reported that Tropical Storm Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 215 miles southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 250 miles southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. Packing maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, it is tracking east-southeast at 2 mph.
