The way you pay on the Turnpike is changing, as open road tolling is set to begin this weekend. Officials say open road tolling will begin on Sunday on the eastern portions and northeast extension. The entire turnpike should become “open tolling” by 2027.

It's a new era on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as Open Road Tolling rolled out over the weekend, making traditional toll booths obsolete.

"Open Road Tolling (ORT) is the culmination of the PA Turnpike’s decade-long journey to modernize operations on our 565+ miles of roadway," the turnpike said in a news release.

Travelers will be able to pay their tolls without having to slow down or battle traffic at toll plazas. A series of gantries over the highway will take care of that.

The new automated fee collection system will take effect on the turnpike east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension.
