Gov. Kay Ivey has scheduled a special election to replace Senate President Pro Tem Greg Reed, R-Jasper, who is leaving the Senate to work as Ivey’s senior advisor to workforce transformation. Reed has represented District 5 since 2010.

A January special election to fill a vacant seat in the Minnesota Senate will determine control of the chamber. Gov. Tim Walz on Monday ordered the special election in response to the passing of longtime Sen. Kari Dziedzic, 62, who died Friday.

It will be held Jan. 28 to fill the seat of Democrat Sen. Kari Dziedzic who died Friday from ovarian cancer. She represented District 60 in Minneapolis. Dziedzic’s death leaves the Minnesota Senate at a 33-33 split.
