Homicides decreased 18.7% from 2024 and 34.5% from 2023, with 165 murders recorded -- the lowest number since 1965. This is the first time in roughly 60 years that Detroit has seen fewer than 200 murders. Nonfatal shootings dropped to 447 in 2025 from 607 the previous year. In 2020, the city recorded more than 1,000 nonfatal shootings.

Mayor Mary Sheffield and other officials will share 2025 Detroit crime data during a press conference Wednesday morning.

Hundreds gathered on Tuesday evening outside of Chita's Nefertiti bar, where a 28-year-old man was shot to death, and his brother was stabbed multiple times over the weekend.

Detroit freeway shooting on I-75 on New Year's Eve closes highway
State police are investigating a freeway shooting in Detroit that happened late Dec. 31. A motorist told law enforcement a shooter struck his car twice, firing shots from a Dodge SUV. The shooting happened near Grand River in the southbound lanes of I-75 (FOX 2) - A shooting on a highway in Detroit is being investigated by Michigan State Police after a vehicle was found with two bullet holes.
