Hurricane season can be stressful for anyone near the potential path of a storm, as powerful winds and heavy rain can cause widespread damage, cut power for days or weeks and otherwise upend people’s lives.

Don’t be fooled – there’s still time for major activity this season. Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, the strongest-ever storm to hit Jamaica, had winds topping 185 mph and could have turned toward the Sunshine State.

The prime minister ordered mandatory evacuations as officials braced for tens of thousands to be displaced. Three people were killed and 13 others injured during preparations for the storm, the health minister said.

The Category 5 storm is expected to hit record breaking wind speeds and threaten never-before-seen storm surges.

The island of Jamaica is bracing for the worst. Hurricane Melissa is expected to reach a category five status. Connecticut residents are now preparing to help loved ones on the island after the storm hits.

President DONALD TRUMP told reporters on Air Force One that the U.S. was prepared to help Jamaica “on a humanitarian basis” and that officials were “watching closely.” It may take days or weeks for the full scope of the damage and death toll to become known given widespread communication and power outages.

Hurricane Melissa intensified to a Category 5 storm on Monday and continued to strengthen as it moved closer to Jamaica, where it was forecast to cause life-threatening flash flooding, landslides, and devastating damage to infrastructure. It arrived on the island’s southwestern coast around noon local time Tuesday.
