Oregon leaders condemned the violence and called for calm in the hours immediately following the shooting of two people by federal immigration agents in east Portland.

A US Border Patrol agent “fired a defensive shot” during a vehicle stop of a Venezuelan migrant, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, both Democrats, called for a pause in the federal immigration crackdown pending a full and independent investigation.
