Tropical Storm Melissa was nearly stationary in the central Caribbean on Friday, with forecasters warning that it could strengthen and swipe Jamaica as a powerful hurricane and dump a staggering amount of rain -- up to 35 inches -- on southwest Haiti,
According to the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. Saturday advisory, Tropical Storm Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 165 miles southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 240 miles southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. The system is moving to the northwest at 3 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.
A tropical wave, located just east of the southeastern Caribbean on Sunday, could develop by midweek — potentially into a tropical storm, experts said.
The National Hurricane Center on Saturday tracked a Caribbean-bound system with a medium chance to develop into the season’s next tropical depression or storm.
