While Harris dominated the Hawaii vote, data shows Trump has gained ground. In 2016, 29% of Hawaii voters cast ballots for Trump. That increased to 34% in 2020 and 37% this year. It’s the best showing by a Republican nominee in the Aloha State since 2004, when George W. Bush got 45% of the vote.
Republicans are set to net two seats in the House, improving their numbers to eight. Meanwhile, Samantha DeCorte is winning in the Waianae Coast’s Senate District 22. She’ll be the third Republican in the Senate, the first time that chamber has had that many minority members since the early 2000s.

A recount of the House 39 votes continued into Thursday night. It was the only race that changed based on the final ballots, according to state Elections Chief Scott Nago. By law a recount can be triggered only if the difference of votes is less than 100, or less than one-quarter of 1 %, whichever is smaller.

Republicans also gained control of the senate, which lawmakers here at home say will make getting things accomplished for Hawaii more difficult. Jill Tokuda won reelection to a U.S. House seat representing Hawaii on Wednesday. Tokuda's 2nd Congressional District covers rural Oahu and all of Hawaii's other islands. Tokuda was first elected to the seat in 2022 and is a member of the agriculture and armed services committees.
