South Africa’s batting hero Aiden Markram has taken longer than expected to deliver on his promise, but a match-winning century against Australia in the World Test Championship final is being hailed as the biggest in the country’s cricketing history.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper Rishabh Pant was jumping in joy for his IPL teammate and South Africa's T20 captain Aiden Markram, who brought out one of the knocks of the ICC finals as his 136 in the fourth innings was the foundation stone of South Africa's maiden WTC title win.

Rishabh Pant hailed Aiden Markram for his “great knock” and also congratulated South Africa on winning the tournament.

Australia left-armer Mitchell Starc, who took three of South Africa's five second-innings wickets, told cricket.com.au they tried almost everything with the ball to dislodge the South African opener as he took full advantage of the best batting conditions in the second half of the match.

Aiden Markram, the T20 captain for South Africa, ensured that the Proteas weren't letting another chance of finally ending the trophy drought slip as the table-toppers beat Australia in the final to win their maiden World Test Championship mace.
