Gov. Mike DeWine announced his own Lt. Gov. Jon Husted as the next senator from Ohio, passing over entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. “Jon Husted will be right at home in the United States Senate, and he’ll be at home on day one,” DeWine said Friday in a press conference at the statehouse in Columbus.

With the appointment of Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted to JD Vance’s Senate seat, Ohio has two Republican U.S. Senators for the first time in 18 years. The last time that happened, the senators were George Voinovich and Mike DeWine — Ohio's current governor who, last week, appointed the 57-year-old Husted to the Vance vacancy.

Vivek Ramaswamy, who was also seen as a possible replacement for the vice president-elect, is widely expected to run for governor of Ohio instead.

In a lengthy post on X in December, Ramaswamy waded into the political discussion on American versus foreign-born workers and railed against a culture that he said had misplaced priorities. “Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer)” he wrote.
