NFL insider Jordan Schultz was the first to report that Pennel asked for his release. He clearly knew that the Kansas City Chiefs were interested in his services.

The Cincinnati Bengals had one of the worst defenses in the NFL last season, and this year, they’re somehow worse, and that was on full display during the team’s 39-38 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.
The Cincinnati Bengals announced they released defensive tackle Mike Pennel. Pennel had 15 tackles in the eight games in which he played for Cincinnati. The Bengals also placed linebacker Shaka Heyward and center Matt Lee on the reserve/injured list.
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor was looking for some leadership on the defensive side of the ball in the wake of Sunday's 39-38 loss to the Jets and players responded to that on Monday.
