Watkins Park in Mount Airy was more somber than usual Sunday as hundreds of people from the community gathered near the jungle gyms and the picnic area. Many of them held candles lit to honor the life of 13-year-old Mason Paul Kearns.

On Sunday evening, hundreds gathered to honor the teen who died after he was swept into a drainage pipe by flash floods last week. 13-year-old Mason Kearns was playing near a drainage ditch on Main Street and Watersville Road,

The Mount Airy Police Department has identified Mason Kearns as the 13-year-old who died after being swept into a storm drain during Thursday's flash floods.
