Hurricane Melissa strengthens into Category 4: What to know about the storm's path, latest forecast
Hurricane Melissa strengthened into a Category 4 storm as it churned northwest through the Caribbean Sea on Sunday.
Hurricane Melissa is currently a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph as it's "starting to accelerate northeastward over the Bahamas," the National Hurricane Center said.
Ponding and localized urban flooding is a possibility. In addition to the heavy rain, a rumble or two of thunder is possible as the Storm Prediction Center has parts of our region, mainly south of Philadelphia, under the marginal risk category, which is a level 1 risk — isolated strong to severe storms possible.
Melissa’s 185 mph winds rival the most intense Atlantic storms on record. The Category 5 hurricane is threatening Jamaica with a storm surge of up to 13 feet.
According to a National Weather Service forecast office in South Carolina, Gulf states typically spend more time in the forecast cone. Not so this year.
