The S&P 500 Index ( ^GSPC -0.22%) enjoyed a fantastic year in 2024, gaining roughly 24% (as of Dec. 30). Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK.A -0.80%) ( BRK.B -0.48%) performed similarly, depending on which share class you look at.

Buffett has trimmed some stocks more than others. Integrated oil and gas company Chevron (NYSE: CVX), for example, is Berkshire's fifth-largest position, and Buffett only sold small amounts in the first and second quarters of 2024 and didn't sell any in the third quarter.

Berkshire Hathaway bought up more VeriSign shares as the final days of 2024 ticked away. Warren Buffett’s company paid $15.6 million from Dec. 26 through Monday for 76,487 more shares of VeriSign, a provider of internet domain-name registry services.
