The massive band of weather stretches from the Isles of Scilly in the far south west to the right across the North Sea as far as Denmark.

The Met Office has issued a rare amber weather warning as they forecast that heavy rain could lead to mass flooding. Issued around 10am on Sunday, the warning for heavy rain is set to affect a large area of the Midlands and will touch on Yorkshire & Humber and London and south east England.

Sunday marks the autumnal equinox - a biannual event in which the sun is exactly above the equator. Sunday’s weather warning will remain in place until 11.59pm, with the Met Office forecasting up to 80mm of rain over the course of 12 to 24 hours - nearly matching the September average for rain in the UK.

The Met Office urged people to 'be prepared' for weather warnings to 'change quickly' and to stay up to date with the forecast in their area. The warning encourages people to check if their homes are at risk of flooding and to check roads and public transport before travelling.

On Monday an amber alert for rain will come in at 5am and run alongside the existing yellow warning. The Met Office says those covered by the amber warning, which includes the Potteries, can expect heavy rain - with the possibility of flooding and travel disruption.

The Met Office upgraded its weather warning from yellow to amber for heavy rain on Monday, meaning there is an "increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather". The weather agency said this could cause difficult driving conditions, power cuts and cancellations to public transport services.
