The Doko race was introduced in 1989 and is a rite of passage for aspiring Gurkhas to be selected for the British Army (Brigade of Gurkhas).
The symbolic arrest of an ‘MLA’ was also staged at the front of Parliament Buildings in Belfast by environmental activists.
A counter-protest, organised by Stand Up To Racism and a number of local groups, was also expected, police added.
The role is to include oversight of air and water quality, waste management, nature and biodiversity and the marine environment.
