The stadium was built to accommodate the team’s 2004 season, which was shortened due to the NFL’s lockout. The stadium was designed to be a state-of-the-art facility, with a seating capacity of over 65,000.

Located in Mission Valley outside San Diego, construction on the massive four tier stadium began in 1965. The first game was played on April 19, 1967 between the Chargers and the Detroit Lions.
