We see all kinds of disturbance to Shorebirds around the high tides from natural to human induced, but this was a first for us while leading a Shorebird Tour this year. A Dingo taking a stroll down the beach. He looked quite young and was sniffing as he went but didn’t necessarily look like he was in pursuit of the birds. Yesterday we celebrated World Migratory Shorebird Day by checking out the incredible migratory shorebirds species in Roebuck Bay feeding on the low tide. These feeding Great Knots have been slowed down in the video by 50% to really see them in action otherwise it’s just so fast! They are searching for bivalves and with the large tides they can’t waste any time. Right place, right time. Roebuck bay is full of life (we want it to stay that way too!), it spans 30km by 20km. When the tide drops and we head down to the water’s edge to get a spot where the migratory birds will come in front of us, we often just pick a location. Last week, the Broome Bird Observatory team assisted with the summer MYSMA (Monitoring Yellow Sea Migrants in Australia) shorebird counts — an Australasian Wader Studies Group project led in the field by Chris Hassell. 278,925 Shorebirds were counted and 10,466 terns!
