The Midway Men’s Club is one of those State Fair institutions I’d hate to see disappear. The food is good, the prices are some of the fairest on the Fairgrounds, and it still feels like a real community gathering place in a way that’s getting harder to find. KKK Day drew more than 150,000 people to the State Fair of Texas in 1923. My grandmother was an 18-year-old Black woman living within walking distance of the fairgrounds. That’s Mama in this photo.
