Gray wolves can be found in various countries across the Northern Hemisphere. They differ in size, appearance, and diet depending on their specific region. Wolves are considered habitat generalists, which means they can thrive in a wide range of environments, from tundras to deserts. In the wild, wolves have three primary requirements for survival: an adequate amount of prey, a habitat large enough to support both their pack and their food source, and human tolerance for coexisting with wolves.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources placed a tracking collar on this gray fox last fall as part of a study to learn about the factors affecting the state's gray fox population. Since then, she's raised a litter of six pups. Gray foxes like her aren't doing as well as their red counterparts in the Midwest, the Iowa DNR says.
