Like a flickering ember, the Holocaust — the effort in the 1930s and 1940s by the Nazi regime to murder all European Jewish people — is fading from living memory. At least four survivors with roots in the Pittsburgh area have died since January. Fewer than 20 survivors remain in the region, where there had been at least 350. The iconic McDonald's Big Mac has a Pittsburgh history. The story goes that Uniontown native Jim Delligatti, an early McDonald’s franchisee, wanted to boost sales at his dozen restaurants. In 1967, he introduced the Big Mac at his Uniontown restaurant for 45 cents — more than twice the price of a regular hamburger at the time — and sales increased by 12% within a few months. In 1968, McDonald’s rolled out the new sandwich nationwide. Delligatti’s son, Mike, demonstrated how a Big Mac was made. R
