You don’t count BEFORE you rap, you wave your hands/nod your head & FEEL the difference the beats. It’s just that “1-2-3-4” sounds more professional than “la-la-la-la”. Singers do the same with a Solfegio (Do Re Me etc.), But I’m not focused on the notes just the rhythm. However, since singers know about Octives they know the Solfegio counts up to 7 then resets.
