Let’s look at this gorgeous example of 18th century fashion: a 1750s gown, constructed from silk fabric from the 1720s. In common with many 18th Century dresses, the fabric predates the 1750s style of the garment. During the mid 18th century it was normal for luxurious, expensive fabrics to be remodelled into more up to date designs. This gown is probably English, although widespread copying and the influence of the French silks make its provenance uncertain. Now in the John Bright collection, t
