NASA's Hubble Space Telescope Captures Amazing Image of Cygnus Supernova Blast Wave
Photo credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, W. Blair; acknowledgment: Leo Shatz NASA/ESA's Hubble Space Telescope captured an amazing image that shows a small section of the Cygnus supernova blast wave, located approximately 2,400 light-years away. This supernova remnant got its name from its position in the northern constellation of Cygnus (the Swan ...

The Veil Nebula is a supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. This would have been one hell of a bang when it went off 10- 20k years ago. It’s about 2,400 light years away and is 130 light years across. It’s also expanding so fast (1.5 million kilometers and hour) that we can actually see it change even though it’s sooooo far away. If we look at Hubble images from 1995 until now, we can directly observe the shell growing. This is a VERY rare phenomenon in space given the vast distances. An

What does a supernova look like? This visualization simulates the first 150 milliseconds of a supernova. As the star collapses in on itself, hot gas emits from its core in uneven shock waves. Researchers use computer simulations like this to more accurately understand the events of a dying star. | NASA Ames Research Center

Ride the (shock) wave! This time-lapse video shows Hubble images of the Cygnus Loop, the tattered remnants of a star’s supernova explosion, taken in 2001 and 2020. The remnant’s shock front has expanded with time, traveling into interstellar space at over half a million miles per hour (~ 805,000 km/hr). Oksana Korda | Astro Art & Science on Instagram: "The bright orange star is 32 Cygni - a binary system with an eclipsing red giant and hot blue companion. Flowing across it is LBN 331, a section of the Veil Nebula’s eastern filament. This glowing strand of ionized gas marks the shock front of a supernova that exploded over 10,000 years ago. The filaments’ structure reveals the turbulent interaction between the blast wave and the surrounding interstellar medium. Thank you @colorado_astro for capt
