I love my raised beds! They allow me to garden without bending over as much, they make it easy to water, fertilize, plant, weed and harvest. However, they do have one pretty big draw back. Soil in raised beds is loose by design. Loose soil settles as it is watered and disappears completely when we pull it out in the roots of the plants we are going to dispose of. Each spring and fall I “recharge” my beds with new soil, compost and trace minerals. This spring I recharged my beds with @landscapers

Even though fall is the best time of the year to move an established perennial, sometimes the plants we move die. While there are many reasons a transplanted perennial may not survive its move, one of the most common is air. Air pockets trapped in the soil that you use to backfill around your perennial can dry out the plants roots and this can lead to death. The eliminate, or at least greatly reduce air pockets in the soil around my transplants, I do two things. 1. Practice the “wet to wet” plan

Brassicas, onions, root crops and lettuces are all actively growing in our cooler temps so be sure to feed them! There are three ways to feed winter crops: Liquids - rates vary so read label. However, most that I use recommend 1.5 to 2 ounces per gallon Commercial - apply a balanced fertilizer like a 3-1-2 at a rate of 1 cup per 30 square feet. Rake into the soil and water in to activate Organics - apply 3 cups of organic fertilizers per 30 square feet. Rake in and water Most vegetables are annu

If you are looking for something you can still plant now in your Texas garden, look no further than lantana. Lantana is cold and drought tolerant and produces tons of flowers that are enjoyed by hummingbirds and pollinators. While lantana is a great plant for your Texas garden, it also related to one of the most invasive plants in the world. In areas of the world that don’t freeze, Lantana camara can grow to 15 feet tall and spread with abandon. In parts of southern India, Lantana camara now cov

If you want to be a successful Texas gardener, the best thing you can do is become friends with owners and staff of your local nursery. Beverly Welch @arborgate is a great example of why trips to your local nursery can be your gardening super power. Arbor Gate has been serving their community of gardeners for 30 years. Have you ever wondered why so many local nurseries have been in business for decades? It is because they thrive when you thrive. With a superior selection of plants that are speci

I have limited space in my garden. Because of that, I focus on the crops I love. Green beans are at the top of that list! Green beans 🫘 are an incredibly variable, and fruitful crop. Some green beans grow on vines and some grow on bushes. Some beans a long and round and so are short and flat. Whichever variety you choose, most beans go from seed to fresh beans in about 60 days. Because of this short maturity, they are great crops to get kids interested in gardening and, with a little management

This one 4x8 bed is doing a lot! Cucumbers and beans growing up an arch. Chives, dill, oregano, and marigolds underneath. Peppers with basil in the middle. Yarrow nearby to attract beneficial insects. Tomatoes growing up a second arch. Cilantro and marigolds at the ends. Every plant has a purpose. Companion planting helps with pests, pollination, and making the most of your space. In a hot climate, this kind of setup makes a big difference. #texasgardening #gardeningtips #garden #companionplanti
